Prof. Dr. Clemens van Blitterswijk combines his Professorship in Complex Tissue Regeneration at Maastricht University with being a Founding Partner of the LSP-Health Economics Fund.
He graduated as a cell biologist at Leiden University in 1982 and obtained his PhD in 1985 at the same university. Today, the majority of his research focuses on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, forming a unique basis of multidisciplinary research between the materials and life sciences. Prof. Dr. Van Blitterswijk has authored and co-authored more than 380 peer reviewed papers; he is one of the highest ranking Dutch scientists under the most frequently cited in Materials Science.
For his scientific work, Prof. Dr. Van Blitterswijk has received a number of prestigious international awards including the George Winter award of the European society for Biomaterials and the Career Achievement Award of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society. He has been elected a member of the KNAW.
Prof. Dr. Van Blitterswijk has acted on numerous national and international advisory boards relating directly to both either life and material sciences or to their economic applications. He and has held various positions including Chairman of the Dutch Society for Biomaterials, Treasurer of the European Society for Biomaterials and Council Member of TERMIS (Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society). During his career, he has co-founded multiple biomedical companies and held leadership positions in these organizations.
